Introduction:

Wedges offer another example of a force distance tradeoff. Unfortunately, their use is limited because of the friction they usually create.

Activity:

Try the wedge sample provided by your teacher. Explain the force-distance trade-off involved.

The Essence of The Wedge:

  • A forward force produces a sideways force.
    • Push down on the axe, and the wood splits sideways.
    • Push forward on the door wedge, and the door gets squeezed upwards.
  • MA = (Forward Length) / (Sideways Length)
